National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW)
The executives of this union have become a law unto themselves all over the country. They raise and collect suspicious taxes or levies from drivers on a daily basis. What for? Are they using this money to fix the roads? Of course not! You can see them at every street corner and junction. They even have different factions within the union. Since they are everywhere, they must be raking in millions of naira on a daily basis for their fat executives who do nothing but live large on those collections. Little wonder, election into their executive position is usually a do or die. Is it not government who has the fiduciary responsibility of collecting taxes/levies from citizens? Is this practice applicable in developed countries and climes? It is only in Lagos State that this union did not fully take over government responsibility in this manner. The remaining 35 states are doing practically nothing to block all tax loopholes in this manner. In the face of dwindling federal allocation, states should wake up and stop allowing certain lazy individuals or groups to feed fat on the masses of the people.
